You are a backend engineer who would help build out the Cortico platform. Your role will be focused on core infrastructure, from devops through data pipelines and APIs. Typical day-to-day activities will include: evaluating and deploying new and emerging data-management technologies, coding at all levels of the data stack, and integrating the latest advances in machine-learning-based data analysis developed as part of our collaboration with MIT Media Lab researchers at the Lab for Social Machines.
Python is our go-to language because it offers good support for core use-cases of applied machine learning, API development, data pipelines, and devops tooling. We use elasticsearch for search and for text analytics, and evaluate other data-management technologies (Hadoop/Hive, Spark, PrestoDB) for inclusion in the platform as our requirements evolve. We appreciate AWS’s power and flexibility, if not all its warts, so we use AWS services extensively. Familiarity with all of these technologies is not required, but interest and willingness to learn certainly is.

You are a full stack engineer building amazing user experiences on top of the Cortico platform. Your typical day-to-day activities will include rapid prototyping of novel data visualizations, developing internal tools for training and running machine-learning models, and creating rich public-facing views that demonstrate the power of our data. You will be able to choose which front-end technologies to use to develop for desktop and mobile web.

Head of Research Development & Data Analytics
Cortico is seeking a data engineer and scientist who can collaborate with MIT Media Lab researchers to develop and streamline methods to build into production for all Cortico products.
You will be responsible for continuing the research and development of ideas related to understanding and pushing the public sphere toward healthier outcomes. An initial part of this includes productizing Cortico’s public sphere health indicators to share with the public. Our indicators measure the health of public discourse across traditional broadcast and social media platforms. What elements to measure and how to build precise tools of measurement require constant refinement and engagement with the public, influencers, media-based companies, etc. As a starting point, we are developing a set of health indicators for the U.S. (with the potential to expand to other nations) aligned with four principles of a healthy public sphere.
Productionizing research code and developing the public sphere health indicators will entail building and managing the development of data pipelines, APIs, and user interfaces. Typical day-to-day activities will include: coding at all levels of the data stack and assisting in the development of advanced machine-learning based data analysis. Python is our go-to language because it offers good support for core use-cases of applied machine learning, API development, data pipelines, and devops tooling.
Lead product development using research that enables learning the semantics of data (images, video, text, audio, speech and other modalities).
Work towards long-term bold research goals, while identifying intermediate milestones.
Support the progress of relevant research within the Laboratory for Social Machines
Minimum of five years of relevant industry experience.
PhD in a technical or mathematical discipline.
Experience leading a team in solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches.
Experience analyzing data from different sources.
Experience in theoretical and empirical research
Ability to communicate research for public audiences.
Knowledge in a programming language.
Ability to obtain and maintain work authorization in the country of employment in 2018.
Experience driving original scholarship in collaboration with a team.
Experience in developing and debugging in Python.
